PP1990:2007 Extracts from the Structural Eurocodes for Students of Structural Design
New guidance on the Structural Eurocodes
A new revision
of the guide to the Structural Eurocodes is launched by BSI. The guide aims to introduce all students of civil
engineering, structural engineering and structural design to the principles of the ten Structural Eurocodes
being implemented across the European Union.
The Eurocodes standards provide common design principles and rules for everyday use for the design of structures and component products. They provide a common series of methods for calculating the structural strength of elements used in construction.
This new revision includes updated extracts from nine of the ten published Eurocodes, each with an explanatory commentary. This edition also includes extracts and commentary on the relevant published UK National Annexes.
Primarily written for UK undergraduates and students in English-speaking universities worldwide, the guide would also be valuable for postgraduate study and as a development tool and resource for engineers and technicians.
The main chapters are:
- basis of structural design
- actions on structures
- design of concrete structures
- design of steel structures
- design of composite steel and concrete structures
- design of timber structures
- design of masonry structures
- geotechnical design
- design of structures for earthquake resistance
- design of aluminium structures.
Why are the Eurocodes are important?
Ten Structural Eurocodes are being published and have started to replace most European national codes from 2007.
The codes are mandatory for European public works and are set to become the benchmark standard for the private sector, throughout Europe and world-wide.
Eurocodes are designed to help the European construction industry become more competitive and improve structural safety. The codes require designers to think in a different way and use more supporting guidance and software.
