Design Management

BS 7000 series
This is a series of standards for the management of design and can support the design of manufactured products, of services, of construction projects, for planning obsolescence in all stages of the life of products, and for managing inclusive design. There are currently seven standards in the series.
BS 7000-1:2008 Design management systems. Guide to managing innovation
Describes how senior executives within organizations can plan their products and services a significant time into the future - for three product/service generations. Research has revealed that organizations that evolve a framework for long-term innovation react faster to threats or surprises, are more likely to take effective action, and are better at sustaining the momentum of change. This standard puts forward a comprehensive framework and outlines how key issues might be tackled.
BS 7000-2:2008 Design management systems. Guide to managing the design of manufactured products
The success of business enterprises is built largely on their products, services and corporate reputations. Design has a critical influence on the conception and delivery of products that closely match the customers' needs and aspirations.

This standard gives guidance on managing the design of manufactured products, and is relevant to all types of product and for every stage of manufacture from raw material through fabrication, delivery and use to ultimate disposal. It sets out the tasks and responsibilities in implementing an effective design policy for senior management, project managers, design managers and designers.
BS 7000-3:1994 Design management systems. Guide to managing service design
Service design is the formative stage of a service. It should be used to meet the reasonable and foreseeable requirements of the potential users of the service whilst using the available resources with economy.

The concepts, principles and quality system elements described in BS 7000-3 are applicable to all forms of service, whether solely of a service character or in combination with the manufacture and supply of a tangible product. This can be shown as a continuum ranging from a situation where the service is directly related to a product to a situation where there is little product involved. The standard gives guidance on the management of the design of service at all levels, for all design organizations and all types of service.
BS 7000-4:1996 Design management systems. Guide to managing design in construction
This document gives guidance on management of the construction design process at all levels, for all organizations and for all types of construction projects. It is intended for those who work in, or interact with, the construction industry. Where general management principles are given, they may be adapted to suit any size of design organization or construction project. The guidance given covers the management of design activities throughout the life-cycle of a construction project, from the point when the client initiates a project.
BS EN 62402:2007 Obsolescence management. Application guide (previously BS 7000-5:2001)
Obsolescence affects all products and it impacts upon all stages of the life of products. The objective of obsolescence management is to ensure that obsolescence is managed as an integral part of design, development, production and in-service support in order to minimize cost and detrimental impact throughout the product life cycle.

This Standard gives guidance for establishing a framework for obsolescence management and for planning a cost-effective obsolescence management process that is applicable through all phases of the product life cycle. It can be applied to all products that include electronic, electrical and electro-mechanical components, although its use can be extended to include other products and processes.
BS 7000-6: 2005 Design management systems. Managing inclusive design. Guide
Provides a comprehensive framework to help all enterprises, public sector and not-for-profit organizations introduce a professional approach to inclusive design. It concentrates on the management, not the practice, of inclusive design. It contains guidance at organization and project levels.
BS 7000-10:2008 Design management systems. Vocabulary of terms used in design management
Defines terms used in design and its management, and includes those that may have particular meanings when used in different areas of industry and commerce. It has been prepared to assist those who have a responsibility for or an interest in design and its management.
