Building, Construction and Civil Engineering
If you're a student of building, construction and civil engineering you will learn about relevant core standards during your course.
Standards are voluntary documents but you should be aware of Building and Fire Regulations (issued by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister), and how they relate to British, European and international standards.
The Construction Products Directive (CPD) is one of the 'New Approach' Directives that aims to create a single European market by removing the technical barriers to trade between Member States through the use of harmonized standards and approvals.
There is also information on the BSI British Standards site that will guide you to some of the important standards areas for Building and Construction.
- Fire safety engineering and design
- Health, Safety and regulations
- Utilities and services
For Civil Engineering students you will need to be aware that Structural Eurocodes are replacing British Standards for structural design; they are being introduced to harmonise standards for the industry across Europe.
To see details of the BSI student guide to the Structural Eurocodes, follow the publications link. To identify other standards, you need to search on BS Online.
