7-11 Introduction

The challenge for us all

Our planet contains many resources for us to use. But once they're used up, they will be gone forever. Our natural resources include the oil, gas and coal we use for energy. These are causing global climate change.

We need to save our natural resources. This means that other people can use them, now and in the future. We need to be more 'sustainable'. Could you do this for a school event?

How BSI standards can help

BSI British Standards (BSI) creates 'standards' and helps companies use them. Standards are guidelines for people to follow.

The new British Standard, BS 8901, is for people who organize events. This might be a music concert, sports event, or even a large meeting. The new standard will help events to use fewer resources.

There are thousands of events every year in the UK. They use many natural resources. Events' organizers helped us to create this new standard. They include Lord's Cricket Ground and Live Nation - the world's biggest concert promoter.

The whole events industry can use the new standard to save resources.

In 2012 the London Olympics will take place. This will be the largest ever event in Britain. Every day 700,000 people will use the Olympic Park. London 2012 strongly supports the creation of the new standard - they also aim to use fewer resources and avoid harming the planet.

Why you are important

An event at your school might seem tiny compared to the Olympics. But there are over 30,000 schools in the UK and every school holds many events each year.

We can all make a difference. Every school can save resources. These small savings all add up! Together, they can become a big change for the better.

Your challenge: make one of your school's summer events a sustainable success!
