BSI Education

Kitemark

Learning objectives

Pupils should be able to:

  • identify and list Kitemarked objects in the classroom
  • justify why certain objects would require a Kitemark
  • enlarge the Kitemark whilst maintaining the Standards and proportion of the mark
  • select key BSI words from a wordsearch.

Starter

Use the background information for teachers and the pupil information sheet to discuss BSI and the Kitemark. Ensure that pupils have a good understanding of the necessity of maintaining Standards in Britain and know the meaning of the Kitemark. Brainstorm other products pupils think may need to have Standards. For example, clothes being the standard sizes.

Resources

Teaching sequence

Activity 1 – Allow pupils to investigate their environment (classroom/dinner hall) and list all the Kitemarked objects. Possible Kitemarked objects could include windows, rugby boots (studs), electrical plugs and televisions.

Activity 2 – Encourage pupils to think about why the listed objects would require a Kitemark. What Standards is BSI trying to maintain? Possible reasons products are Kitemarked are:
  • toughened glass – safety (e.g. microwave oven doors)
  • studs on rugby boots – protection
  • playground equipment – stability and safety
  • fire blankets – fire safety
  • bike and motorbike helmets – safety
  • chairs – strength and stability.

Activity 3 – Can pupils enlarge the Kitemark keeping the proportions of the mark the same? Please note: the Kitemark is a BSI trademark and can only be reproduced in the correct proportions.

Activity 4 – Complete the BSI wordsearch (solutions below).
