Activity sheet 2 – Designing your own bridge
Maintaining Standards is very important when building bridges, especially since bridges are expensive to construct and over time many vehicles and people will cross them. They also have to stand up to wind, rain, earthquakes, heat and cold.
Think about these Standards when you construct your own bridge.
Before you begin building your bridge, you must to decide which Standards you need to make sure your bridge is safe.
Discuss with your partner what an engineer and a designer will need to think about to ensure your bridge is safe and serves the correct purpose. Rank them in order of importance. Think about the load, purpose, width, span, who/what is crossing it?
What checks will need to be done to make sure the bridge remains safe and stable (checks on joints, checks on materials to check they haven’t crumbled (concrete) or corroded (steel).
