Playground Standards
Anyone may find that they have to design a playground area, from leisure and amenity officers of local authorities, school governors, groundsmen and publicans.
There are a number of factors which need to be taken into consideration. For example:
- safety the needs of people visiting and using the play area
- maintenance
- visual appeal
British Standards cannot help designers plan a play area, but the construction, safety features and maintenance of play equipment itself are covered in BS EN 1176 Playground equipment. General safety requirements and test methods and the materials used for the playground surfaces are in BS EN 1177 Impact absorbing playground surfacing. Safety requirements and test methods.
To help you understand what a standard might cover, here is BS EN 1176 in the spot light.
