Torque test

Generally this test should not produce any small parts or accessible sharp edges, points or springs.

This test is important when toys are placed in the mouth.

If a toy or mask is to cover the face the torque test should not expose any sharp edges, points or small loose parts which could enter the eye.

Testing in school

In school, the torque test procedure would be the same as in industry.

Your results should be recorded, a conclusion drawn and a decision made regarding the component material, filling or joint.

Testing in industry

If a component can be gripped between thumb and forefinger, apply a torque gradually for 5 seconds in a clockwise direction until either:

  1. A rotation of 180° from the original position has been obtained
  2. Maximum rotation has been held for 10 seconds.

Rigid mounted parts on an accessible rod should be tested with the rod clamped to prevent it rotating.

If clamps are used when testing soft toys they must not damage the main body of the toy, this would affect the results.
