Soaking test
Toys which include mouth pieces should always be tested, whatever age child the toy is aimed at.
All toys which are designed for children under 36 months should also be subject to this test. Young children are likely to place part of the toy into their mouth.
Testing in industry
The toy or component is submerged in a container of demineralised water at a temperature of 20°C+/-5°C for 4 minutes.
Remove the toy, shake off the excess water and keep the toy at room temperature for 10 minutes. The test is carried out 4 times.
Immediately after the last test the cylinder test is applied.
The component or toy must not have shrunk enough to make it dangerous.
Testing in school
A similar test to industry could be completed in school, by using a bowl of water, a thermometer and a stop watch.
Your results should be recorded, a conclusion drawn and a decision made regarding the attachment, part or feature.
