Sharpness test

Testing in industry

Sharpness of edges
A self adhesive tape is attached to a mandrell which is rotated for a single 360° along the edge being tested.

The mandrell must be at 90° to the edge, a force of 6N is used.

Remove the tape from the mandrell. Measure the length of the cut. If the cut is more than 50% of the length of edge tested then the edge is classed as too sharp.

Sharpness of points.
A special point tester is used.

Testing in school

Sharpness of edges. Wrap some self adhesive tape around a thick metal rod. Pull it gently along the edge of the part, if it cuts into the tape then it is too sharp.

Sharpness of points
Use the same test as above.

Your results should be recorded, a conclusion drawn and a decision made.
