Strength of seating test
BS 4875 describes methods for determining the strength of seating. Part 1 determines the strength of chairs and stools. Part 3 deals with settees and other articles such as benches with seats from two to four persons.

The principle of this test is to assess the static strength of the article under high levels which only occasionally occur. |

The principle of this test is to assess the impact strength under the rapid rate of loading that occasionally occur. Different loads are used on different parts of the article. Examine the diagrams of the tests on a chair. |

Testing in school Weights of the average body should be placed on the product in different areas. Check with the diagrams shown in industrial testing. If this is seating for a child you will use different weights to that for garden furniture. A child's seat could be labelled that it is not suitable for adults. Your results should be recorded. Any improvements to joints and/or manufacturing methods should be recorded. |
