Electricity test

Toys using electricity for its main function and extra tasks, e.g a dolls house with an interior lamp must conform to these tests.

Transformers may be part of the toy or a separate item.

The toy is classed as electric if it has at least one function dependent on electricity.

A battery toy is a toy which contains one or more batteries as the only source of power.

Toys must be constructed so that the risks to persons or surroundings when the toy is used are reduced as far as possible, bearing in mind the normal behaviour of a child.

Testing in industry

Tests for checking the overheating of toys.

Toys are tested in positions in which they are most likely to overheat. For example: in a corner covered in cotton. Tests are designed to simulate conditions where parts that people normally touch might become hazardous.

Testing a hand-held electric toy:

The toy is suspended, connected to an extra power source and operated under normal operating conditions reproducing, for example, a child continuously pressing the button of a play phone. Any increase in temperature is monitored.
