Cylinder test
This is a simple test to check whether a toy part is too small and therefore may cause a child to choke.
If a toy is to have an age label, 'Not suitable for children under 36 months', the toy must not produce any parts which may wholly fit into the cylinder.
If a feature or attachment is securely fastened and passes the tests that show it does not come away from the toy, the cylinder test will not be required.
Testing in industry
Place the toy or component any way round, without squashing it, and place in a cylinder with the dimensions shown. The toy must not fit entirely within the cylinder.
Testing in school
Make a paper cylinder using the correct dimensions. Use the diagram to see how to cut out the shape. Roll together and secure with a paper clip. If you stand the cylinder on its level base it will be easy to test the size of your toy part.
Your results should be recorded, a conclusion drawn and a decision made regarding the attachment, part or feature
