Activity sheet 2 – Designing an information poster
Use your results from activity sheet 1 as well as the information below about ISO 14001 and the ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ to design an information poster for businesses and organizations about implementing a sustainable management system. Think about how businesses and organizations could benefit from such a system.
ISO 14001
ISO 14001 is part of a series of international Environmental Management Standards (EMS). These standards are used by businesses (and other organizations) to guide them in developing an environmental management system – that is, a plan of how they can operate in a way that minimizes damage to the environment. Businesses can also use ISO 14001 to test how well they’re achieving their environmental goals.
Using ISO 14001, businesses go through a series of stages to develop their environmental management systems. These stages are called ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’.
The ‘Plan-Do-Check-Act’ Method
First, they PLAN their system. To do this, they think about what results they would like to achieve, and what steps they’ll need to take to achieve those results. Then they put all their ideas together in a plan.
Next, they DO. Following the plan they’ve made, businesses then put their ideas into practice.
Then, they CHECK that their plan is working, and is achieving the right results.
Finally, they ACT, thinking about everything that they’ve learned during the first three stages and using that information to come up with ways to make their system even better.
