Activity sheet 1 – Play your part!

Think about your part in London 2012. How old will you be? Where do you think you’ll be living? What will you be doing? You might be:

  • Taking a short break from your studies; travelling to London with friends to catch the Games action.
  • Working in the Games village. Think about what role you could play: groundskeeper, cleaner, office worker, chef, driver, medical assistant, IT technician, or something else?
  • Staying at home with family, watching the Games on television?
  • Competing in the Games! You’ll be in a tough training regime up until the day you compete, while still making time to deal with the press, stay in touch with your friends and family, and have some ‘time out’.

My part in London 2012 will be:

What sort of actions could you take to make your own Games experience a sustainable event? Think about your actions in three stages: Before, During, and After the event.

Before the event:
Consider the things you might do to prepare for the event: paperwork, organising transport, buying clothing and other items, stocking up on food and drinks etc.
For example: (Office worker in the Games village) I will print out documents on recycled paper.

During the event:
Consider the things you might do during the event: transport, celebrating, eating/drinking, spare time activities, accommodation etc.
For example: (Staying at home to watch the Games on television) When we need more snacks, I will walk down to the market to get some fresh fruit – leaving the car at home.

After the event:
Consider the things you might do after the event: clean up, transport, recycling and reusing items bought for the event etc.
For example: (Competitor) I will invite other competitors from different countries to share ideas about sustainability and how we can contribute.

Now, think about the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games as an industry – that is, a system of inputs, processes, outputs and feedback. Think about the different stages in the system, and how each stage could be managed sustainably. Note down your ideas in the flow diagram below.

Inputs
For example: Builders could use recycled materials and renewable resources to build the stadium.

Processes
For example: Adding solar panels to the roof to power lighting for the event.

Outputs
For example: The buildings, systems and grounds can be used by the local community after the event, and other events can take place there.

Feedback
For example: The event can be evaluated for sustainability, and the best ideas can be passed on to the country who will host the 2016 Games.
